Backflow Prevention – What is it and do I need it?
Backflow is the flow of contamination or pollution into the drinking water distribution pipeline. Backflow can be caused by backsiphonage or backpressure. A backflow prevention device installed on your private plumbing system will prevent dirty water from getting into our clean water system. Not all homes require a backflow device. If your private plumbing system is connected to a device that can potentially cause a backflow hazard, you need a backflow preventer. Common systems that require a backflow preventer are: Underground irrigation system, dedicated fire sprinkler system, sewage pumping facilities or grey water system, private well or a swimming pool or spa with automatic refill.
